Abstract

The application of the large potential approximation method (extrapolation of the linear range of the polarization curves to the corrosion potential) for corrosion rate determination of carbon steel in acid solutions was investigated. The effect of uncompensated IR drop is discussed and a technique involving its theoretical compensation is described. This technique makes corrosion rate and Tafel slope determination possible. Its reliability was assessed with a gravimetric method.
