Abstract

IQENS (incoherent quasi elastic neutron scattering), Rayleigh wing and Raman measurements on two isomeric alcohols, n-pentanol and 2-methyl-2-butanol, are presented. The presence, in both the isomers, of a “fast” time in the rotational lineshape of IQENS and in the Rayleigh wing rotational component, has been identified as the rotational jump of the methyl group. Furthermore, by a comparison of the extracted “slow” relaxation times, it is possible to evaluate the second rank static Kirkwood correlation factor g 2 for both the alcohols. Finally, analysis of the Raman data provides an interpretation of the spectral features in terms of symmetric OH sub-bands, originated by various intermolecular aggregates.
