Abstract

Chapter 1 analyses the significaCompetition and Innovation: An Inverted U Relationshipnce of intellectual property rights (IPR) protection to Asia’s economic growth and discusses its prosperity based on the framework of the trade–investment–services–IP nexus. It examines ASEAN's multi-layered efforts on enhancing IPR protection, including the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), multilateral IP treaties administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization, and regional trade agreements, such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs). It sheds light on how the region could improve adherence to international agreement(s) containing robust IPR standards to gain access to, or secure an established presence in, the GVCs.
