Abstract

Dr. Gold’s thesis regarding intermittent positive pressure breathing is extremely valid and timely … as timely as it was 25 years ago when first introduced to a skeptical body of physiologists. It has been the subject of recurrent editorials, some recent and one of a similar nature by myself1 not too long ago …, all of which seem to have done little to minimize his reservations. Our original response to this thesis was that, if true, pressure breathing therapy would die a natural death. On the contrary, there has been a continuous increase in the use of pressure breathing throughout the world, and, significantly enough, in institutions where financial considerations would be-detrimental, rather than conducive to its growth.
