Abstract

For IPOs in the computer software industry, we find that first day returns can be attributed to pre-IPO risk and acquisition activities consistent with Jensen’s (2005) perspective of the agency costs of over-valued equity. To this we add the theory of the sentiment investor as the driver of inflated first day returns.
