Abstract

In 2010, Internet Protocol (IP) technology continues to expand both within existing markets and in new application spaces. With the underlying costs of bandwidth continuing to drop, many new applications are moving onto IP-based networks. While delivery of entertainment video to consumers remains a mainstay, professional applications such as contribution video and audio are being deployed increasingly on both public and private IP networks. This article begins with a survey of recent developments in Internet video, in which content providers continue to refine business models and seek technologies that will generate profitable growth. This is followed with a look at developments in IPTV networks, in which carriers are deploying private networks to deliver linear programming to consumers. Next is a look at how the video contribution market, the last bastion of dedicated fiber-optic and private time division multiplexing (TDM) circuits, is being infiltrated by IP technology The article concludes with a look at other applications for IP video gaining traction today.
