Abstract

This paper outlines the strategy adopted for establishing an Internet Protocol (IP) Based Combat Operations Centre, by collating surveillance inputs from various surveillance devices and sensors with both day and night visibility using wired and wireless communication media using the Cloud Service Model. These inputs, are being received at the combat operations centre manned by commanders and decision makers, who swiftly assess the operational situation and quickly decide how to neutralize the target by use of a robot with an exclusive IP Address connected on to the network, however, the weapons used by military could also be integrated which could result in an integrated Combat Operations Centre. This is a low cost, sturdy, robust and reliable system using innovative set up for field conditions for use by defence and security establishments using the Cloud Delivery Model. It is less complex and easily usable by security men in various terrains, harsh and inhospitable conditions. While use in autonomous mode in this field is popular, however, not much research in use of robot in integrated mode in defence application has been done. The heart of the circuitry is a PIC Microcontroller, suitably interfaced to a Wireless Router through a RS 232 to serial controller, Robot controller interfaced on wireless media and is based on IP hence finds wider usage. The robotic actions involve to and fro movement and “drop” and “grab” actions. The analog sensors interfaced comprise of temperature measurement, presence of gas and metal, operated using instruction sets written in software based on “C” Language, the temperature is measured in steps of 2o degrees, being a prototype model. Parameters of the results are as expected and in consonance with the desired result. Implementation of a Combat Operations Centre, connected with a Robot and using IP, is for the interim period, till such time the similar solution being developed by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) is realised. This interim implementable model when fielded, will prevent soldiers from being vulnerable and exposing themselves to dangerous combat situations, and prevent valuable loss of lives of our security forces. Future improvement can be done by embedded technology using GSM Gateway with GPS for better accuracy and connectivity. By image processing techniques, the commanders can get a better tactical picture of target and facilitate appropriate decision.
