Abstract

The current generation of computing needs the exploration of intelligence in its implementation. The intelligence can be achieved through a cooperative effort among the different intelligent devices. These devices perform three essential operations: sensing, actuation, and communication. The cyber-physical system effectively utilizes the data and information from the deployed sensors to integrate the computing, networking, and physical processes. It provides support to realize the vision of ambient intelligence. Ambient intelligence is an emerging discipline that brings intellect to our everyday environments and makes those environments sensitive to the processes. The realization of ambient intelligence needs the support of real-time service delivery from anywhere and at any time. The evolution of the Internet of Things has provided a platform that supports communication using IP-based protocol and provides a platform for the industries to grow by implementing automated manufacturing, delivery, and industrial operations management. In this context, this chapter introduces ambient intelligence through sensing and actuation technology. The role of cyber-physical systems and next-generation sensors in the field of Industry 4.0 is also discussed with a significant role of IoT and the challenges associated with it. Finally, the role of embedded intelligence is explored with the use of a few case studies.
