Ionospheric Modification by High Power Radio Waves

Abstract

The first published observation of the phenomenon of modification of the terrestrial ionosphere by high power radio waves was made by Butt (1933), who observed that the transmission from Radio Paris was superimposed on the signal transmitted by Radio Luxembourg. The most often quoted reference in the literature, however, is that reported by Tellegin (1933), who reported the reception at Eindoven, Holland, of the program from Radio Luxembourg (the “unwanted signal,” p = 200kW, f = 250 kHz) on top of the “wanted” signal-Radio Beromiinster — at 650 kHz. Tellegin correctly interpreted this observation as the interaction of the two signals in the ionosphere.
