Abstract

Morphology of midiatitude and equatorial F2-layer storms as well as recent publications en storni mechanisms are suminarized. Ground-based ionosonde, incoherent scatter and satellite observations are used te specify [heprocesses responsible for [heobserved F2-layer storrn effects. The interaction of background (solar-driven) and storminduced (due te high-latitude energy inputs) thermospheric circulation pattems may be considered as [he principal mechanism explaining [he main features of [he midiatitude F2-layer storni effects. Vertical ExB plasnia drifts are responsible for main NniF2 perturbations in [heequatorial F2-region.
