Abstract

Abstract The note describes ionospheric effects recorded on 9 July 1962 at Rarotonga, Godley Head, and Campbell Island. All stations recorded a brief period of absorption immediately after the detonation (H). At Rarotonga the F region showed the passage of an atmospheric wave with peak 70 minutes after H. At Godley Head and Campbell Island a cloud of electrons appeared in the F region within a couple of minutes of H. When the F layer reformed after the cloud disappeared, it was more spread than normal and extended to higher frequencies. The electron cloud has been attributed to the effects of a hydromagnetic wave.
