Ionophore A23187 stimulates [formula omitted] to release prostaglandin F 2α

Abstract

High performance liquid chromatography and radioimmunoassay were used to identify the rostaglandins synthesized by Entamoeba histolytica (NIH:200 Strain) Ca 2+ ionophore A 23187 stimulated amebae produced elevated levels of prostaglandin F 2α when compared with the control cells. There were no significant differences in the levels of prostaglandin E 2 and thromboxane B 2. This is the first report of a stimulated non-mammalian cell producing prostaglandin F 2α.
