Abstract

Polymers with pendant double bonds were synthesized by functionalization of a ready backbone with polysulfone or through polymerization of monomers that contain a relatively unreactive double bond under the polymerization reaction conditions. Styrene-based monomer and epoxides were polymerized through an anionic mechanism leading to polymers with polydispersity indexes of 1.23 and 1.21 respectively. Fluorinated lithium salts were linked to the polymers through platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation of the pendant double bonds prior to an ion-exchange with an acid. The conductivities of the resulting ionomers were measured giving a maximum conductivity of 3 mS/cm for a polysulfone functionalized with a fluorinated sulfonimide
