Abstract

In order to assess the possible use in terrestrial and space applications, radiation effects by different ionizing radiation (gamma ray, electron beam, and mixed neutron / γ radiation) upon erbium and ytterbium co-doped fibre (EYDF) made by in-situ nano solution doping have been investigated. The spectral attenuation, unsaturable loss at 830 nm, emission and lifetime of irradiated (max dose is up to 140 kGy) and non-irradiated EYDF samples are measured, and the outcomes were analysed and compared. The results indicate that both the spectral attenuation and unsaturable loss at 830 nm are increased significantly and that the emission is reduced by radiation induced attenuation (RIA) and the decrease of the lifetime. The radiation effects produced by electron beam and gamma ray are almost comparable. The comparison between the radiation effects induced by pure gamma radiation and mix gamma and neutron radiation indicates that the neutron irradiation may have, to some degree, opposite effects as compared with pure γ ray.
