Abstract

A profilometer operating on the principle of residual-gas ionization by accelerated particles makes it possible to measure a beam profile without degrading the characteristics of the beam. The coordinates of the residual-gas ions are determined using a position-sensitive detector based on microchannel plates in a chevron geometry and a three-electrode anode. Measured profiles are presented for an electron-cooled and uncooled proton beams. The problems associated with implementation of such a measurement scheme and methods for solving them are discussed.
