Abstract
The ionization of xenon Rydberg atoms excited to the lowest states in the n=17 and n=20 Stark manifolds at Si(100) surfaces is investigated. It is shown that, under appropriate conditions, a sizable fraction of the incident atoms can be detected as ions. Although the onset in the ion signal is perturbed by stray fields present at the surface, the data are consistent with ionization rates similar to those measured earlier at metal surfaces.
