Abstract

The cross section for the ionization of lithium by electron impact is calculated using Born's approximation. The total cross section is expressed in terms of the sum of cross sections for each partial wave of the ejected electron, and calculations are made using Hartree-Fock wave functions for the bound states and both Hartree-Fock continuum functions and undistorted Coulomb functions for the ejected electron. The total cross section agrees well with the classical Gryzinski and Thompson cross sections for incident electron energies greater than 54 ev.
