Steigman, Gary ; Werner, Michael W. ; Geldon, Fred M. Abstract Using the orbiting-collision approach devised by Field and Steigman, we have calculated the rate coefficients for the charge-exchange reactions N+ # H N t 11+ for temperatures between 100 and 10 0 K. It is found that the ionixation equilibrium of nitrogen in interstellar space is strongly influenced by this charge-exchange process. The degree of ionixation of nitrogen approaches or exceeds that of hydrogen in a hot, partially ionixed intercloud medium, but falls well below it in the clouds. The N ii resonance line at 1084 A will thus be formed only in the intercloud medium, and its strength is shown to be a sensitive indicator of the temperature of this region.
