Abstract

Ionic liquids (ILs) may be conveniently described as compounds composed entirely of ions that are liquid at a temperature less than 100ºC. Recently the use of ionic liquids in electrochemical investigations have greatly increased due to their excellent properties such as high viscosity, high thermal stability, wide liquid range, tunable solvent properties, good ionic conductivity and wide electrochemical potential window. ILs are termed as ‘‘Green Solvents’’ as they possess negligible vapor pressure. ILs due to their interesting properties have widely been used for electrode modification purposes. ILs are being extensively employed to modify the surfaces of glassy carbon electrodes, screen printed electrodes, gold electrodes etc. better detaction limits have been obtained with the use of IL-based voltammetric sensors. The advancement in the field of ILs indicates a bright future for their use in research purposes and further development of them to serve the research community. Keywords: Ionic Liquid, Voltammetry, Electrochemical detection.
