Abstract

The adiabatic compressibility of aqueous sodium chloride solutions has been determined as a function of both concentration and temperature. A simple model has been employed to interpret the data in terms of size and compressibility of hydration shells. On the basis of the analysis performed it has been possible to estimate the values of the volume contraction caused by ion–water interactions, the intrinsic volume of ions, the hydration numbers, the compressibility and density of water hydration shells, and their variation with temperature and salt concentration.
