Abstract

Abstract Formation of highly polymerized hydroxo-complexes of aluminum ions proceeded so slowly in a dioxane-water mixture that less polymerized intermediates were detected by means of the usual emf titration techniques. The titrations were performed at 25° in solutions of total aluminum concentrations of 0.00500, 0.0100, 0.0200, 0.0399, 0.0400 and 0.0798m in a 0.2 mol fraction (55.01 % w/w) dioxane-water mixture containing 3m LiClO4 as an ionic medium. The emf data obtained can be explained in terms of the formation Al2(OH)24+ (log*β2,2=−6.95±0.07) and Al2(OH)33+ (log*β3,2=−10.02±0.03) assuming equilibrium conditions. It was observed that these complexes proceed further slowly to form highly polymerized complexes.
