Abstract

Mossbauer spectrometry, neutron diffraction, XANES, and XPS have led to the determination of the cation distributions of the system Cu 0.5 Mn x Fe 2.5− x O 4 (0≤ x ≤1.5). The three cations are present in both tetrahedral and octahedral sites, and the relative number of Fe ions on A- and B-sites remains nearly constant in the whole range of x . It appears that for x ≤0.5 manganese is divalent and copper is in its two oxidation states. For x >0.5 copper and iron are respectively divalent and trivalent; the manganese is in +2 and +3 oxydation states.
