Abstract

Electrical conductivity measurements were made of 95CaS-5Na 2 S solid solution at 723 K through 1173 K under a sulfur partial pressure range from 10 -10 to 10 3 Pa with an altemating current bridge. The compacted 95CaS-5Na 2 S disks were sintered at a temperature of 1323 K because the sublimation of Na 2 S became significant over 1373 K. The conductivity of the 95CaS-5Na 2 S solid solution was independent of the sulfur partial pressure, and its temperature dependence can be expressed as log (σ/(S.m -1 ))=-3.12×10 2 /T-1.407 (723-1173 K). The apparent activation energy for electrical conductivity was 5.97 kJ.mol -1 . An electrical resistance change with time was found for potentiostatic electrolysis of 95CaS-5Na 2 S. These results lead to the conclusion that the 95CaS-5Na 2 S solid solution is an ionic conductor.
