Abstract

A large glass-forming region for alkali fluoride-containing ZrF 4-based glasses were found to be obtainable in the systems MF-ZrF 4-LaF 3 where M is Li, Na, K, Rb or Cs. Electrical conduction in glasses xMF · (95 − x)ZrF 4 · 5LaF 3 (mol%) ( x = 20–55) was examined by ac and dc conductivity measurements. Motion of lithium ions in these glasses was examined with 7Li CW-NMR. Electrical conduction in glasses xLiF · (95 − x)ZrF 4 · 5LaF 3 ( x ⩾ 30) is due only to lithium-ion conduction, while that in glasses xLiF · (95 − x)ZrF 4 · 5LaF 3 ( x < 30) is due to both lithium-ion and fluoride-ion conduction. In any composition all the lithium ions in the glasses participate in electrical conduction.
