Abstract

ABSTRACT The ion-exchange capacity of 7 samples of siliceous and calcareous oozes from the Experimental Mohole, Guadalupe site, was found to range from about 6 to 20 milliequivalents per 100 grams. The oozes contain various amounts of siliceous radiolarian tests, minerals of volcanic origin, and clay. The clay consists of varying proportions of chlorite, mica, vermiculite, and montmorillonite, and has ion-exchange capacities ranging from 24 to 36 milliequivalents per 100 grams for different samples. Calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium were determined as exchangeable cations. In general Ca > Na >K > Mg, but several samples contained very fine grained calcite that may have dissolved in the ammonium chloride used to determine the exchangeable cations.
