Abstract

The ion optics of the electric hexapole are discussed. When applied in the normal mode with alternate positively and negatively charged poles it can be used as a correction device for the image curvature of an ion optical instrument, but it is shown that five other independent functions exist for influencing the ion optical properties of an instrument, i.e. rotation of the beam, beam deflection in two perpendicular directions, and quadrupole effect and two-directional focusing.
