Abstract

A nonperturbative method for the computation of the neutralization probability in ion(atom)-surface slow collisions was developed. The finiteness of the valence band of the solid was taken into account (this treatment goes beyond the wide-band approximation). This method was applied both to resonant and to nonresonant neutralization and the dependence of the neutralization probability on the interaction strength and ion velocity was analysed. The perturbative result was obtained as a special case. An exponential dependence of the ion survival probability on the inverse collision velocity (for an interval of the velocity) was found, which is in agreement with experiments.
