Abstract

Studies of ion-molecule reactions in methane-oxygen and acetylene-oxygen mixtures show comparatively few and relatively slow reactions between the hydrocarbons and oxygen. In methane-oxygen mixtures the principal cross product ions are CH 3 O 2 + , CH 2 O + , CHO + , and CH 3 O + , the first two being formed from O 2 + and the last two from CH 4 + . In addition, CH 4 + reacts with O 2 to form CH 3 + . In acetylene-oxygen mixtures C 2 H 2 O + , CHO + , and C 2 HO + are the only cross product ions formed in significant amounts. The first two are formed from O 2 + , and the latter probably comes principally from C 2 H + . CH 2 + and C 3 H 3 + are enhanced by oxygen, but the reactions are not well established.
