Abstract

Results are presented of computer calculations giving the number of generated photo-ions at the intersection of effusing molecular and focused photon beams as a function of the geometrical parameters of an effusion capillary, the parameters of the photon beam and the mutual position of both beams. Also, results are given of the number of generated ions for the condition where both beams are parallel. The calculations were successfully compared with those for the crossing of the N 2 molecular beam with an electron beam in the open ion source of a cycloidal mass spectrometer.
