Abstract

Abstract The ion density of a plasma channel induced by a relativistic electron beam is investigated experimentally under various gas pressures. The electron beam generated from a gas-filled foilless diode propagates through a gas-filled drift tube. The ion density is obtained from the magnetic decay time of the plasma current following the electron-beam current. A theoretical model is developed to explain the experimental observation. The experimental data agree well with an analysis of the theoretical model.
