Abstract

Abstract Ion-molecule reactions in gaseous benzene, benzene-d6, and their mixtures, particularly the formation process of C3H3+, have been investigated using ion cyclotron single- and double-resonance techniques. Double-resonance experiments demonstrated that C3H3+ is formed by the ion-molecule reaction: C6H7++C6H6→C3H3++neutral product. In C6H6–C6D6 mixtures, not only C3H3+ but also deuterium substituted ions, such as C3H2D+ and C3HD2+, are formed from C6H7+. Quantitative analysis of the double-resonance intensity revealed that C3H3+ is formed by the decomposition of the intermediate complex of [C6H7+–C6D6], which is a σ-type complex.
