Abstract

The effect of transverse velocity shear of plasma flow parallel to the embedded magnetic field on the generation of electrostatic ion cyclotron waves is studied analytically by using kinetic formalism. It is found that electron-neutral collisions are destabilizing, as it is in shearless plasma flows. However, flow shear not only modifies the frequency and growth rate of a known ion cyclotron current driven (ICCD) collisional electrostatic instability, but is the source of the development of specific shear-flow-driven ion cyclotron collisional instabilities at the levels of current along the ambient magnetic field which is subcritical for the development of the ICCD instability.
