Abstract

Transport properties of the amphoteric ion exchange membrane-aqueous sodium chloride system have been studied. The six elements of a conductance matrix (Phenomenological coefficients) have been experimentally determined according to the previous theory[1] and the membrane properties were discussed in terms of the conductance elements. It has been shown that the diffusional ion conductances are ca. ten times greater than the electrical ion conductances and the ion-solvent correlation in the transport processes is much less than the interionic correlations. A failure of the Nernst-Einstein relation as well as Despic and Hills’ equation for the electroosmotic effect on the membrane conductance was also pointed out.
