Abstract

UV emission spectra produced by 1–25 keV H+, Ne+, He+ ion and 0–1 keV electron impact on SiF4 have been obtained and absolute emission cross sections of bands with maxima at 304 and 370 nm have been determined. The energy dependence of the ion impact data is qualitatively in accord with the Rapp—Francis theory of charge transfer and yields the relevant ionisation energy of SiF4 via the Massey criterion. The electron data are discussed in terms of the Bethe theory and are compared with ionisation data of SiF4 as well as CF4. Elimination of energetically inaccessible fragmentation pathways for the initially formed SiF+4 (D̃) ions indicates that the possible emitters are SiF+3 and SiF+4 ions of which SiF+4 (D̃) is selected on the basis of photoelectron data.
