Abstract

AbstractIodine is constitutive of the thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) essential for life stimulating metabolism, bone and nervous system grow. The synthesis of thyroid hormones is regulated by hypothalamus-hypophysis axis. The default in iodine is frequent in the world. Hypothyroidism is characterized by a decrease or absence of the production of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism is often from iatrogenic origin, sometimes auto-immune (Hashimoto), from dietary origin or with hypophysis default. Hyperthyroidism is also severe with a great variety of symptoms, and more frequent in elderly people and females. The causes of hyperthyroidism are various with Grave’s disease, thyroiditis, treatment with amiodarone, nodules and thyroid cancer. Iodine can be also toxic and some aliments containing iodine can be the cause of allergy. Iodine can be measured in both blood and urines by « Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry ».
