Abstract
Abstract : This report summarizes a series of presentations that were delivered at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography on June 24, 1999, in a special session on Arctic Bathymetry that took place during the Sixteenth annual Meeting of the GEBCO Subcommittee on Digital Bathymetry (SCDB). The objectives were to outline the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) and the nature and the scope of the initiative to develop the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO). In paper form the most recent version of GEBCO, 5th edition, was published by the Canadian hydrographic Service between 1975 and 1982. The first release of GEBCO in CD-ROM was in 1994; the third release is scheduled for the end of 2000. The IBCAO project was initiated for the primary purpose of constructing a modern digital database that contains all available bathymetric data north of 64N, for use by mapmakers, researchers and others whose work requires a detailed and accurate knowledge of the depth and shape of the Arctic seabed.
