Abstract

Most diseases are not curable because of their degenerative nature. Natural product-based nutritional approaches are available to prevent such types of disorders. Laurus nobilis is an aromatic evergreen tree or large shrub with green leaves that belong to the flowering plant family Lauraceae. Illicium verum is a medium-sized evergreen tree native to northeast Vietnam and southwest China. Myristica dactyloides a plant species belonging to the family Myristicaceae are used for this study. Crude polyherbal extract (PHE) of three different plant materials, Laurus nobilis, Illicium verum, and Myristica dactyloids, were prepared by maceration process. Phytochemical screening along with in-vitro anti-inflammatory, oxidant, mitotic and microbial activities were carried out. A dose-dependent response was observed, and significant anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activity were recorded at a concentration of 100 μg mL-1. In seed germination studies the polyherbal crude extract interaction inhibited the germination which was compared with the known anti-mitotic agent methotrexate. However, the seeds had shown germination when treated with water and solvent. The results of the present study indicated that PHE has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant properties. Furthermore, the PHE had shown synergistic anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. These properties may help in managing harmful diseases by this PHE and further studies are warranted for exploring other possible beneficial effects.
