Abstract

In the present study, the standardized Acaiberry extract was studied for in-vitro antidiabetic activity. The aim of this work was to evaluate the inhibitory activities of the methanolic extract of standardized Euterpe oleracea (Acai berry) of family Arecaceae, at different concentrations. Diabetes is a severe, metabolic disorder characterized by increased levels of glucose that circulates in the blood plasma. Alpha amylase and alpha glucosidase inhibitors are used to achieve greater control over hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus. The present study intends to screen alpha amylase and alpha glucosidase inhibitors from natural sources like plants in order to minimize the toxicity and side effects of the inhibitors currently used to control hyperglycemia. The acaiberry extract exhibited significant α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities with IC50 value 6.29 mg/ml and 7.03 mg/ml respectively and well compared with standard Acarbose for alpha (α)-amylase and alpha (α)-glucosidase inhibitory activities respectively.
