Abstract

The Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) has enabled the world’s top display products ranging from large cinema projectors to small pico projectors that can fit in smartphones. This paper will walk through the journey of the DMD pixel design evolution from the original digital micromirror concept to the most popular FTP pixel design. The motivations, challenges and impacts of major design changes of four generations of DMD pixels will be discussed including pixel size shrink from 17μm pixel to 10.8μm pixel and tilt angle increase from 10 to 12 degrees.
