Abstract

We have recently confirmed that barium hydride shows fast pure ionic transport of hydride ions (H-) in a high temperature, high symmetry phase. BaH2 gives rise to hydride ion conductivity of 0.2 S/cm at 630oC. This is an order of magnitude larger than that of state-of-the-art proton conducting perovskites or oxide ion conductors at this temperature. Alkaline earth hydride (AEH2) compounds also show remarkable exchange capability with nitrogen gas, forming a variety of nitrided compounds. Here we will present combined in situ measurements of conductivity and structure as functions of temperature and amosphere.
