Abstract

Electrocatalysts, particularly for the oxygen evolution reaction, are dynamic systems that evolve during operation with composition, structure, and morphology changing. These processes can have dramatic effects on electrocatalytic activity, electrical properties, and the electronic interfaces that form when electrocatalysts are deposited on semiconductors in solar photochemical architectures. I will discuss recent work from our team applying operando atomic force microscopy, x-ray absorption microscopy, and a suite of electrochemical techniques to understand this dynamic behavior. I will also describe new efforts to interrogate the properties of electrocatalyst/semiconductor interfaces under operating conditions with nanoscale resolution using potential-sensing atomic force microscopy.
