Abstract

An unusual morphology of the Pt-based catalyst, embedded in a PFSA membrane matrix, is described. The catalyst was developed for reducing hydrogen gas crossover in the PEM water electrolysis process. A modified electroless reduction procedure carried out to deposit catalyst on and within PFSA membranes resulted in the formation of hollow Pt spheres. The morphology of the catalyst particles was confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Hydrogen permeability measurements and some experimental results for the gas crossover reduction are reported.
