Abstract

Quantum computing is an emerging technology that is going to be disruptive in almost all sectors. Quantum computing is not just about the speed of computing but its ability to solve certain class of problems which are considered to be unsolvable by any computer of today or near future. The reason behind the phenomenal power of a quantum computer lies in the underlying physics of its operation which is quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics is based on the natural laws which are found to be agnostic. At present there are different platforms to implement a quantum computer but the fore-runners are superconductor and ion trap based quantum processors. The basic abilities and techniques of implementing basic quantum gates will be discussed along with challenges to scale up the devices. The implementation of gates in case of ion traps requires more than one technological stalk. As the technology is rapidly progressing, the complexity of the implementation is getting more limited by engineering than by fundamental physics. These issues will be discussed in details as concluding remark.
