Abstract

In this overview we discuss the electronic and optical properties of quantum-confined nanoparticles. In particular, we want to show what we can learn from first-principles calculations, regarding the influence of size effects and surface functionalization on the electronic properties of nanoparticles and demonstrate how the optical properties of nanoparticles can be tailored. Here, we are focusing on sustainable materials, namely silicon-based nanoparticles with hydroxyl functionalization.
