Abstract
The perioperative use of red cell or coagulation products in a critical care setting has been debated in the adult literature. The literature in pediatrics is comparatively scant but certainly merits attention. The study by Szekely and colleagues [1] concluded that the total amount of blood transfusion was independently associated with an increased risk for infection in pediatric patients undergoing congenital heart disease operations with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. Platelet transfusion was associated with a lower incidence of nonvascular pulmonary complications.
