Abstract

Serious pulmonary disease represents a major health problem. At present more than 4,000 patients in the United States are on the waiting list for lung transplantation and nearly 300 die each year without receiving an organ. Others with severe acute pulmonary injury that is potentially reversible are not saved even with the best available mechanical ventilation techniques. In addition, a significant proportion of patients who receive a lung transplant experience severe early graft dysfunction that is potentially reversible if a period of intensive respiratory support is provided.
