Abstract

In this issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Edgerton and colleagues [1] reviewed their single-hospital experience of 590 patients operated on over 24 months and monitored for at least 1 year. The purpose of the study was to relate the initial discharge destination, which was either to home or to one of three types of extended care facilities (rehabilitation, skilled nursing, or long-term acute care), to the combined end point of 1-year survival and living at home. Approximately 85% of patients in their study were sent home.
