The authors have presented an impressive review of their 17-year experience with combined, simultaneous cardiac surgery and carotid endarterectomy (CEA). This experience focuses on a subset of patients (ie, 79 valvular surgery patients), and deals with simultaneous, on-pump CEA. This is indeed a subset, because most experience in practice and in literature applies to combined carotid/coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery, which will dominate this comment.
