Abstract

Henry and colleagues [1] present the aspects of postoperative disposition after valve surgical procedures in octogenarians as related to outcomes and long-term survival. This report calls out the somewhat obvious findings that patients not discharged to home had higher rates of major postoperative complication and of prolonged ventilation, as well as longer length of stay—all descriptive of the types of patients who need more care beyond the acute care facility, even with available, willing, and attentive caregivers in the home.
