Abstract
During my years working in Kenya and Ethiopia, I used to warn keen short-term volunteers that, as much as they came motivated by a sincere desire to help African patients, the only real impact they could expect was on themselves - they will leave changed, and what they will receive will outweigh anything they could give. It was a tough and sobering statement, yet essential for addressing the inherent savorism that characterized - and still does - so much of global surgical care.
